Personal summary of reading: Architecture and Transgression: An Interview with Bernard Tschumi, by Mosley, J and S, Rachel,

Bernard Tschumi published an essay in 1976 entitled ‘Architecture and Transgression’ in an architectural journal, Oppositions. His essay was a provoking thesis that aimed to push architects and theorist away form the ‘rules’ of architecture, to push boundaries and see how transgression forms. Further more the essay explores how concepts compare to experiences within architecture. Tschumi is interviewed in 2013 to see how his own ideas have transgressed and his current opinions.
Tschumi makes an understandable point that in today’s society, we see architecture through pixels rather than through actually multi-sensory experiencing the architecture for its purpose; the advances in technology have allowed this to happen. Further more after visiting Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, Tschumi developed his idea that architecture is only made when the structure is produced and that it from that point of completion that we experience architecture.

Architecture is compared to erocitism, a double pleasure of mental and senual factors. I think that one could agree with Tschumi if they understood the concept of the architecture and had a passion, enthusiasm or understanding for architecture. Tschumi is very knowledgeable in understanding how architecture can physically move people as well as their emotions and this interview emphasis this. I enjoyed this article and Tschumi views on transgression and his graphic controversial postcard series to provoke architects and theorists.
